We arrived in Rome on Thursday afternoon. We had very easy flights - all connections were on time and the kids even slept on the plane. (Of course, neither CJ or I did, so we were a bit tired for the remainder of the day). Our first day was rainy, but not too cold (about 50 degrees). And even with the rain we were still able to get out and find some pizza and cheap wine!
My first impressions - when you look beyond all the dirt and graffiti - was of a beautiful old city with a lot of stories to tell. Driving from the airport to the apartment (in a car driven by a man who works for the University but speaks only Italian), it was amazing to fly by one historic site after another. Every corner you turned brought you past another historic landmark.
Friday we did a bit of sight seeing combined with some real attempts to get things done. Italy is not designed for efficiency. So the fact that we succeeded in getting cell phones is probably an accomplishment in and of itself. Today we are working on getting a converter, so we need to run off.
A few funny items to leave you with... Augustine is having the time of his life. Every motorbike he sees he says - I want to ride it. And the pigeons in front of the Pantheon are very aggressive so he can get very close to them. (Which doesn't thrill me but makes his chase much more fun). Celia is working on her Italian. Though instead of Ciao, she likes to say ca-ciao (as in lightening McQueen in Cars).
