If you've ever spent any time with a two year old boy, you'd know that they require lots of space to run, jump, spin, race - generally just move around. And while Rome is a city that is great for walking, it isn't a city that is great for an active toddler. So you have to be creative.
There really aren't parks as we know them in the states anywhere inside of the center of Rome. So the best you can do is to find a piazza - an open space in front of some significant building - to let them run. And generally this turns into a racing game. "Run to that fountain and back as fast as you can." That lasts for a good while. But then they start running toward the cars, or hiding behind the fountain - both of which can be nerve wracking. Nonetheless, the piazza's have given the kids some opportunities to burn off steam. As you can see from the image on the left, after some racing around in front of Santa Maria Trastevere (likely the first place for Christian's to worship built in Rome - around AD 220) Augustine was actually in need of a rest!
Fortunately, we did venture to o
ur first actual green space yesterday with a trip to
Doria Pamphilj which is just a bit northwest of our apartment. As you can see the kids had a great time picking flowers (weeds!) and running around in the grass. (They did manage to avoid most of the poop). We never actually made it to the palace, but you can see it in the background.
Who knows what we'll find today!
