Getting Confirmed...In Jeans

There are over 900 Catholic churches in Rome. And while I grant you that we have only gotten to celebrate mass in 3 to date, we have visited many of them. One thing that has surprised me has been the number of people attending mass in jeans. As I've mentioned, Roman churches have relatively strict dress codes prohibiting visitors to enter the church with legs or arms uncovered. But there is no prohibition on jeans, and so everyone under 50 wears them.

This Sunday we attended mass at San Francesco a Ripa in Trastevere. We selected the mass based on the time and its proximity to our apartment. It just so happened that three adults were getting confirmed during the service. This meant that the service started almost 30 minutes late since apparently not everyone was there at the appointed hour, and it went a little long. But what really struck me was that 2 of the 3 individuals getting confirmed were wearing jeans. Jeans! They couldn't find anything a little more formal to wear?
