Saturday's are a good day to just walk. So far, both of our Saturday outings have taken us on a long circle around the city. I'm estimating today's route at between 8 and 9 miles. We visited this old church, that you may have seen a charcoal sketch of in our place from when CJ was first here. Then we enjoyed some pizza at Piazza del Popolo. After some races in the piazza, we walked up the steps and enjoyed the view from the edge of the Borghese Gardens. We decided to stay up on the hill - or upstairs, as Celia calls it - and walked toward the Spanish steps. I got lots of good pictures of the steps, the church at the top, and the view of the city below. However, my favorite picture is this shot which intentionally (on his part) includes Augustine's foot. He thought it would be a good addition to the picture. After stopping for a much too expensive cappuccino just past the Spanish Steps,
we continued on toward Santa Maria Degli Angeli.
(One note on the cappuccino... there are two sets of prices in Rome. The price you pay for an item you are eating "at the bar" and the price you pay at the table. The price for a cappuccino at the bar ranges from 90 cents to 1.50 euros generally. But the price you pay at the cafe table for the same drink will range from 2 - 4 euros. We were tired and in need of a break, so even though we knew better, we sat...and paid for it!)
Back to S. M. Degli Angeli, this church is built inside of old Roman baths, so there are various elements of it that you don't see in many of the other Churches around the city. I don't have many pictures of the inside, but as we walked out we took a few shots of the piazza at dusk. Here's CJ walking toward another vantage point to video.
Eventually we made it back home but only after stopping for a final round of refreshments to give us the strength to get back! Fortunately Augustine - who had been napping through the last hour or two of the walk - woke up just in time to walk up the many steps leading to our apartment. I don't think either of us had the energy to carry him!
PS... So as you can see, Celia's favorite doll - Jewel appeared in two of the photos from Saturday. It turns out we lost Jewel on Saturday's route. It was pretty traumatic when Celia realized this on Sunday. But we've moved on. And it was a good life lesson...
