As you've seen by my postings, we've spent a lot of time these past three and a half weeks seeing a lot of sights and trying to get the most out of this experience. This weekend we enjoyed just living in Italy.
On Saturday we awoke to a beautiful sunny sky. And instead of racing around trying to visit attractions or museums this is what we did...
Early morning: Coffee, homemade omlete breakfast, cartoons... a relaxing morning
Late morning: An hour at the park/playground burning off steam on the slide and horse & motorcycle (kids not adults)
Lunch: Pizza enjoyed sitting on a bench at Piazza Navona, followed by Gelato for the kids nearby
Early afternoon: Giolotti's gelato for mom and dad. Kids racing through a piazza, Dad sketching
Mid-afternoon: Kids nap in the stroller. Capuccino for Mom and Dad.
Late afternoon/early evening: Cocktails & people watching at an outside table in Campo de Fiori
Evening: Dinner at a real & bustling Italian Pizzaria in Trastevere
Late evening: Strolling through the back streets of Trastevere watching and listening to street performers. Stopping in Piazza Santa Maria for more gelato and hot nutella filled crepes. Sitting on the fountain steps and people watching.
It was a great day spent just enjoying life as Italians do - eating, people watching and talking and eating some more!
Sunday was a similarly relaxing day but for the quick walk/bus ride we had to do to make the english mass at Santa Susanna (the American church in Rome). All in all, it was a really nice break to spend the weekend just living and not sightseeing or being a tourist. And was certainly much more reflective of what life in Italy is actually like for those that live here than what you've seen in my pictures. I could certainly get used to a weekend like this!
